Explanation of History: The south built upon company ownership (ie Viriginia Company) and involvement utilized cheap labor to create larger profits. So instead of hiring wealthier Europeans who would prove expensive and few in number, gave their self privilige to take advantage of slave labor and where else to get cheap slave labor for a one time payment than the Africa’s where tribes were already being wrangled up. Then after transport to the new world they worked in plantations harvesting cash crops for the greedy mouths of the capitalists. Through time tobacco and indigo developed in order of demand to cotton, a successful cash flow to the pockets of plantation owners. However the south did become too dependent on this slave provided money while a storm of tension over the human right issue of slavery grew. This proved fatal for the south, the north and its industrial power and multiconnected cash stream flooded the civilian pocket, and when south decided to divide from the North and become a confederation they practically committed suicide. With only cotton for support, and Britain stuck in a cotton surplus, their sales fell, and now the leaders pockets were drained, and the war was lost. Then emancipation came, strong footed lincoln had taken away the chains of black property, setting forward a wave of human rights for african americans, setting in place the 14th 15 and 16th amendment. But then things stalled, blacks re-entrapped in sharecropping and there lives tarnished by segregation, they went through wars in america until in 1950 they joined in and fought the communist Koreans. Then BOOM… civil rights movement with prominent figures such as Martin Luther King who walked, boycotted and organized protest against the segregation. Soon results of this protest showed in events such as Brown vs. Board of Education which opened schools. This all fit in to blacks pushing their path to full enjoyment of rights and today they finally have those rights. This connect to our tower of Independence because independence is in strength and individuality and when these blacks got their full rights the finally got to enjoy their independence and be an equal individual in our society.
