Explanation of History:
As viewed here Anna Howard Shaw is breaking down the stereotype of women being homemakers and house workers. Anna was the first women to get a degree in preaching helping her become a Methodist minister. Anna also became a physician, a new role for the women of America. Her achievements broke the common perception of women in society at the time, and through her example many women grew to become increasingly independent. She is a symbol for the achievements that the women of America made to reach independence. Explanation of symbols: The pink tile is a representation of women in American history. The tile is pink because the color pink is considered a feminine color. The color looks more delicate and dainty; the common characteristics of women in previous years. The tile represents the kitchen. The kitchen was seen as the prime work area for women, as women were considered homemakers and were given the responsibility to cook and clean. The pink tile is a representation of women in American history. Explanation of History:
After the Civil War, the 14th, 15th and 16 Amendments were written and added to protect the rights of the newly freed blacks. These were considered null and void in the South though. Blacks were beaten, taken advantage of for labor, and killed for trying to exercise the rights they had earned and were entitled to with their freedom. Reconstruction attempted to remedy the South’s political and economical issues but the South’s largest and longest lasting issue was its society and the amount of bigotry and hate that permeated the minds of the Southern plutocrats ruined by the war and the poor farmers who had lost family members over the conflict. Because of this bigotry and hatred the blacks in the South wouldn’t be able to exercise their constitutional rights until Martin Luther King spoke up against racism in the 1960’s. With the Civil Rights Movement gaining popularity, legislation started pumping out of Congress to eradicate the unconstitutionality Southern society had wrought on its political and economic society. Explanation of Symbol: Before the war cotton was such a large cornerstone in the economy that it was called King Cotton. It required a lot of labor as it was a very labor intensive crop. It prospered due to Europe's dependence on American cotton. Many other cash crops such as rice and indigo were also economic contributors to the Civil War. President Lincoln was instrumental in the fight against slavery as he worked hard during the civil war to help solve the issue. |
Explanation of History:
The Cold War was a result of conflicting ideals of Democracy and Communism, the United States vs. the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The Cold War started in 1945 and ended 1991 when Soviet Russia fell. This war was considered to be “cold” because there was no large scale fighting between the two powers. There were in some cases fighting in the Korean War and Vietnam when Communism brought the Domino Effect in Asia, threatening the ideals of Democracy. Explanation of symbols: Camouflage was the standard pattern on military fatigues in the asian theaters of the Korean and Vietnam war to better hide and protect our boys overseas. It symbolizes the struggle that our nation went through when film crews brought the Vietnam war to American televisions. No one had known the horrors of war outside of photographs that were taken. Vietnam was the first war to be featured on film, and it sparked the minds of Americans that war was not that great and started a large anti-war movement. The “hippies” started protesting the war and often they were veterans that had returned and protested in their old fatigues. It showed their struggles with the war and their strong anti-war beliefs. Explanation of History:
The Gay Right’s movement has been in full swing since the first gay pride parade, held in New York, in 1969. The pride parade is usually held annually and takes place in several countries towards the end of June. It does a good job of bringing the community together, especially in the less hostile areas where it is held, along with being a good tourist attraction, generating revenue for the host city. Harvey Milk is the person chosen to be a symbol of Gay Rights because he was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office. He was assassinated in 1978 due to a political issue. Explanation of Symbols: The rainbow flag usually associated with Gay Pride was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker and includes several colors, meant to symbolize equality and inclusion. For example, Blue symbolizes serenity or harmony. It was flown for Gay Pride the day of the San Francisco parade. After the death of Harvey Milk in the same year, the demand for the rainbow flag grew exponentially, becoming a very influential symbol for gay rights activists and pride parades internationally. |
TOPIC: WORKER’S RIGHTS
|
Explanation of History:
The labor rights movement refers to several events where workers claimed to have one right or another. They were the result of big businesses to monopolize and generate a larger cash flow. Influential labor organizations have sprung up, especially in the first half of the 20th century to fight for labor rights. An example would be the International Labor Organization (ILO), established in 1919, later becoming part of the United Nations. The ILO also incorporated a few articles into the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Explanation of Symbols:
One of the largest industries that faced the most productivity and strikes is the steel industry. One of the most famous steel strikes was at Andrew Carnegie’s steel plant in Pittsburgh, which required, vainly, Pinkerton Detectives to put down. The steel industry revolutionized the railways by producing a cheaper and more effective rail type. Because of the industry’s success, the worker’s felt entitled to being respected for their hard work.

|
Explanation of History:
The British were the mother country of the colonies, and took advantage of them. As years went on the problems between the two side kept growing, and people felt as though they needed to raise a voice against the unjust laws being passed by the British. After the French and Indian war the British placed countless numbers of taxes on the Americans. These taxes included the Intolerable Acts, which closed the Boston ports or the stamp Act which required a certain amount of money to be paid for every piece of paper bought. This was a call for the colonists to rebel and fight for their freedom. Explanation of Symbols: The purple velvet represents the British government. Purple is the color of royalty, symbolizing the monarchy the British had. There is a gold border, again symbolizing the royalty and the strength of the British government, as they were the most powerful at that time. Washington and the patriot are trying to break down the unfair rules of the British and fight for their independence. Symbol- Before the war cotton was such a large cornerstone in the economy that it was called King Cotton.
The south was built upon company ownership (ie Virginia Company) and the involvement and utilization slave labor to create larger profits. Over the years, the South became extremely dependent on the agrarian culture they had developed, thus having a huge need for slaves, hindering the South’s evolution with society. This prompted large debates on the issue of slavery and whether it was moral or not to hold slaves. Tensions rose between North and South and war erupted between the two after the South had seceded and attacked the Union base of Fort Sumter in 1861. After the war ended with a Northern victory the South was coerced into submission with post-Lincoln Reconstruction legislation. During Reconstruction, blacks in the South faced a backwards turn to freedom compared to their Northern counterparts. The south had already become too dependent on slave powered labor which hurt the economic stability of the south. Also developing from the war was a wave of human rights for african americans, setting in place the 14th 15th and 16th amendment.
